Mad Barn’s bulk Jiaogulan powder (Gynostemma Pentaphyllum) is used to support healthy circulation, respiration and joints in horses and ponies.
The Jiaogulan vine has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine where it is believed to enhance vitality, energy, stress relief and performance. Research shows that it exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and can support respiratory function.
In horses, Jiaogulan is commonly used for its ability to increase nitric oxide production in blood vessel cells (vascular endothelium). It acts as a vasodilator, increasing blood flow throughout the body.
This has potential benefits for laminitic horses, helping to promote repair of the hoof. It is sometimes used in combination with AAKG (Arginine-alpha-ketoglutarate) to improve hoof health in cold weather conditions or due to damaged AVA (Arteriovenous anastomoses) shunts.
It is commonly given to horses affected by metabolic conditions such as Insulin Resistance (IR) and Cushing’s disease (PPID). It is also used in performance horses to improve the maintenance and repair of muscles, tendons and ligaments. It may be provided as nutritional support to horses recovering from muscle injuries or horses showing signs of a stiff gait.
Jiaogulan powder is also used with Spirulina to support respiratory health. It has been studied in horses to ease symptoms of airway disease due to its vasodilative properties. It may work by protecting the lungs when exposed to environmental irritants such as dust and mold spores.
In Chinese Medicine, Jiaogulan is believed to act as an adaptogen, regulating normal cortisol levels in the body. It works by supporting the body’s natural repair pathways.

Answered by the admin Jiaogulan and MSM do different things so it depends on what you are targeting. Jiaogulan is usually supplemented to improve blood flow which can help with issues with respiratory, hoof, and joint health. MSM is a sulfur source that helps with antioxidant status and supports soft tissues of joints.

You will want to increase the dose slowly and monitor the response. Gum colour change is a key indicator to effective dosage. Once achieved that should signal appropriate dose. You can try increasing it a bit more since you are only feeding once a day, but watch for adverse reactions before continuing to the full double dose. Â

My horse has asthma. Occasionally, when she is coughing I have to use an inhaler. Is it safe to use this product too? She has been prescribed Flovent, and I only have to give in the spring when it is dusty as the crops are going in, and then again in the fall during harvest as the air is dusty. Can she still have this product during Flovent use.

We highly recommend using a scale to weigh out correct amounts of single ingredients for your horse's needs. We trust that if you are supplementing with single ingredients, you have a rough idea of how much is needed. If you need help with this, we can certainly help you do an assessment of your horse's diet.
