Dr. Hayter grew up in sunny Clearwater, Florida. Her love for animals and passion for medicine started at a young age, influenced by her mother who has worked in multiple facets of human medicine, and her father who is a human physician and grew up ranching with his family in west Texas. She solidified her interest in large animal care while earning her Bachelor’s of Science in Animal Science at University of Georgia, assisting in both equine and bovine research projects, learning equine reproduction skills, and spending many hours riding along with an ambulatory equine veterinarian. She then went on to earn a Master’s of Science in Animal Sciences at University of Florida, where she focused on beef cattle reproduction, mainly in the area of zinc supplementation and its effects on fertility. She concurrently earned a Master’s of Public Health in Environmental Health, for which her special project centered on antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella enterica Typhimurium. Between this and veterinary school, she spent time as the Livestock and Forages Extension Agent for University of Florida in Duval County. This is where she truly solidified her love for field work, finding any opportunity to work with clients on their homestead and helping to boost the productivity of ranchers, producers, and farmers in northeast Florida.
