As a kid, Dr. Sera Moran was terrified of animals – especially horses. But she overcame her fear so that she could take riding lessons with her big sister, and eventually she became a classic horse-crazy teenager, spending all her time after school at the barn with her first horse and her eventing team.
Dr. Moran attended UC Davis for her undergraduate education, where she studied Animal Science and worked at the campus horse breeding facility. Everyone assumed she would go on to vet school, but at that age, she wasn’t interested in doing what everyone expected of her. After graduation she moved to the midwest and held a variety of jobs including breeding manager at a reining ranch, massage therapist, and dog groomer. Ten years later, she was finally ready to admit that everyone had be right, and she went back to UC Davis for vet school, with her husband and a small herd of horses in tow.
Back at UC Davis, Dr. Moran fell in love with horses all over again, this time from the inside out. She enjoyed every aspect of equine medicine, but her true passion was reproduction and breeding. After vet school, she did an ambulatory internship and residency at Virginia Tech. There she had the opportunity to work with specialists of all kinds, breed many mares, and really get to know people and horses over years of working together. These experiences solidified her commitment to primary care medicine and fostering long-term relationships with patients and clients. Dr. Moran enjoys routine appointments such as vaccines and dentals which allow her to build friendships with horses and humans; she appreciates more complex medicine cases in which she can puzzle together a diagnosis from a series of clues; and of course she loves all things mare-related. Her absolute favorite part of equine practice is meeting the foals she helped produce the previous year.
Dr. Moran lives in Jefferson with one dog, two cats, her two heart horses, the world’s cutest pony, an orchard of fruit trees, and an extremely patient husband. Goats, chickens, ducks, and houseplants coming soon. (Source)
