Dr. Hammock graduated from the University Of Tennessee, College Of Veterinary Medicine in 1992. After completing an internship in Large Animal Surgery at Cornell, he joined a racetrack/referral surgery practice in Birmingham, Alabama. With a strong desire to pursue his interests in surgery and lameness, he completed an Equine Surgical Residency at the University of Illinois, becoming a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2000. After a brief stint at a referral hospital in Virginia, he was invited to go to Dubai, UAE to join the Dubai Equine Hospital as staff surgeon, providing surgical expertise and healthcare for some of the best equine athletes in the world. After returning to the United States he joined, and eventually became a partner in a practice. He continued to hone his skills and abilities, providing expertise in surgery, as well as assistance in selecting potential equine athletes for some of the top owners in the racing industry. In 2009, the partnership was dissolved and Dr. Hammock returned to Tennessee. He joined a referral hospital there providing surgical and lameness expertise to clients. Being more centrally based, he continued to attend all the major Thoroughbred sales on behalf of his clients. Thoroughbred sales continue to occupy much of his busy schedule.
He has a solid reputation in the show and sport horse world, providing advice and treatment on lameness and other performance issues on horses from all disciplines including Eventers, Jumpers, Hunters, Western Pleasure, Barrel Racers, Roper, Tennessee Walking Horses, and Saddlebreds. He continues to perform surgery on a regular basis at surgery facilities located in Louisville and Thompson Station, Tennessee.
Dr. Hammock has partnered with Dr. Alberto Rullan in the Equine Performance Center. Their combined forces have allowed for the construction of a new state of the art surgical facility which completes the rehabilitation center. This partnership will provide the horse community with a valuable resource allowing for complete surgical and aftercare for equine athletes.
Dr. Hammock’s main interests include upper airway, arthroscopic, and laparoscopic surgery on equine athletes. He holds veterinary licenses in Florida, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, and Tennessee and is a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in the UK.
