Board Certified Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Mary Durando graduated from the University of Georgia in 1987. After working in private practice in Virginia and completing a 6-month medicine-oriented internship at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, KY, she completed a residency in Large Animal Internal Medicine at the University of Florida. Following this she went to graduate school at the Medical University of South Carolina, receiving a PhD in Physiology, in the field of endotoxin research. After the PhD program, she completed a 2-year fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania’s Large Animal Hospital in the Large Animal Cardiology/Ultrasound section. She then relocated to California for 3 years as a clinical lecturer in Equine Medicine at the University of California’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital, before returning to Pennsylvania to work at the treadmill facility in exercise physiology and cardiopulmonary research at the University of Pennsylvania’s Large Animal Hospital. Most recently, she is a partner in Equine Sports Medicine Consultants, an ambulatory internal medicine consulting practice. Dr. Durando was awarded Diplomate status in Large Animal Internal Medicine by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. She has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, and has presented at the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine annual conferences, as well as the International Congress of Equine Exercise Physiology (ICEEP) meetings, and other regional and national/international continuing education seminars. Dr. Durando’s special interests include cardiology and respiratory disorders, as well as exercise physiology and how the disorders of the cardiopulmonary system relate to poor performance. She is also interested in neonatology and sepsis/endotoxemia.
