Dr. Mariah Kerr started riding horses at the age of five with Team Penning, Cutting and Barrel Racing being her favorite events. She was part of the Arizona High School Rodeo Association and National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. She was heavily involved in Future Farmers of America Organization through high school and also served as a State FFA Officer her first year of college.
She received her Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness from Arizona State University, with a focus on pre-veterinary medicine. During undergraduate studies, Mariah worked side by side with her mentor Dr. Robert Cooper at East Valley Equine Practitioners. When she wasn’t studying, she worked at ASU’s Aviation flight school and would occasionally go fly Cessna 172 with her aviation friends. She received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University and hopes to be an equine radiologist, but also enjoys sports medicine.
She loves spending time at the gym and improving her new weight lifting workouts and likes to take some of her muscle training and incorporate them into her training her horse Sapphire. She tells us, “The equine body is unique in a way where you have to be clever to work certain muscles groups. It’s hard to ask a horse to automatically flex their stifle 10 times or rotate their fetlock. Knowing how each muscle groups works is important in rehabbing a horse back to work.”
Dr. Kerr says her favorite thing about being a part of the Alamo team is that she shows up to work every day and feels surrounded by family, “There’s always a smile on everyone’s face; we laugh, we get down to business and most importantly we have fun. I get to work side by side with world class equine veterinarians and take away so many new skills. And that is pretty cool.” (Source)
