Dr. Mackenzie Schneekloth Walkenhorst joined the staff at Paws Claws and Hooves in June of 2019. She graduated from the Iowa State School of Veterinary Medicine in Ames, IA in May of 2019 fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a Veterinarian. Mackenzie has always been around animals on her family’s acreage in rural Nebraska. She was heavily involved in 4-H showing Quarter Horses and Boer goats. She also participated in 4-H Equine Quiz Bowl and her 4-H highlight was achieving Level 4 in the 4-H Equine Levels program as well as qualifying several times for the Nebraska State 4-H Horse Show.
She could always be found riding one of her family’s horses, chasing cattle for the neighboring farmers, or assisting her father with his bird dogs at AKC Field Trials and Hunt Tests. She also actively participated in local open horse shows and loved driving her horse with her buggy or trail riding. She began working at the age of 14 in a small animal clinic in Columbus, NE and continued through high school. She received her undergraduate degree in Animal Science from the University of NebraskaLincoln where she was active on the University of Nebraska Equestrian Team and qualified for finals her senior year, placing 4th nationally. She also participated in a 5-month internship on a Thoroughbred farm in Lexington Kentucky to further her education in the equine industry. Mackenzie’s many experiences in undergraduate studies also include a multiyear position in the UNL Veterinary Diagnostics Lab. Mackenzie’s primary areas of interest are small animals and equine.
Dr. Walkenhorst and her husband chose the Tri-Cities area for the diverse opportunities and outdoor recreation it offers. In her spare time, you can find Mackenzie and her husband seeking adventures on mountain trails or enjoying river walks with their corgi mix, Felix. She also never passed up the opportunity to work with her two Quarter Horses.
