Dr. Kris Harris grew up in Russell, KS showing and training horses with her father. She received a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Kansas State University, and then earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Kansas State College of Veterinary Medicine in 1993. Following her passion for horses, Dr. Harris continued her education beyond vet school becoming a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners specializing in equine. In addition, she is a graduate of Options for Animals College for Animal Chiropractic and obtained certification through the International Veterinary Chiropractic Association. Dr. Harris is also an active member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Kansas Veterinary Medical Association, and American Association of Equine Practitioners. She was named the 2019 KVMA Veterinarian of the Year.
Dr. Harris’ first position after graduation was as an associate veterinarian in a busy, mixed animal practice in York, Nebraska. In 1997, she and her family moved to Ness City and assisted in building new mixed animal facility. Four years later, she bought the practice and started Western Edge Veterinary Center, which served clientele from all of southwest Kansas. In 2016, Dr. Harris moved to Hays and furthered her specialty in horses by establishing an exclusive equine practice, Western Prairie Equine Service.
In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Jay, and their two sons, Kyle and Kade. They own six horses, one labrador, and a cat. Together they own a farm/ranch in Ness County, ride horses, play sports, and are active in their local church and school. (Source)
