Dr. Kara Spillman (aka “Dr. Kara), attended Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude in College of Agriculture and Life Sciences with a bachelor degree in Animal Science in January 2005. At that time she was dual-enrolled in Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine, where she graduated with awards as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in May 2008. During her studies, Dr. Spillman discovered she had a passion for working with the performance horse and a special interest in lameness and diagnostics.
After graduation Dr. Spillman furthered her studies by completing an internship at The Equine Clinic at OakenCroft in Ravena (Albany), New York. Amongst many duties performed during her internship was the oversight of all foalings and primary neonatal care for the farm associated with the clinic, which included over 30 foalings! She continued to pursue her interests in Sport Horse Medicine and began working on Long Island in the late summer of 2009. Dr. Spillman has spent several winters working in the Wellington, Florida show circuit, and now stays on Long Island year-round to service her clients in the area. Dr. Spillman is committed to offering excellent customer service and the best possible medicine to provide ultimate care for your horse, and she is particularly focused on equine sports medicine, physical therapy, and rehabilitation.
Outside of practicing medicine, her work history includes being a Co-professor for Equine Health at the SUNY Cobleskill community college in Cobleskill, New York. At Cornell she was also a member on the Strategic Planning Board Clinical Committee. The committee involved a panel of clinical veterinarians and other staff at the veterinary school that worked to formulate a plan for future clinical programs and improvements. Dr. Spillman is very excited that the same committee has since acquired the old Ruffian Medical Center near the Belmont racetrack, where the Cornell Veterinary School provides an advanced referral center and teaching hospital since April of 2014. With close ties to her alma mater, clients benefit from Dr. Spillman’s positive relationship with a well-respected referral center on the island.
When not working she can be found spending time team penning and sorting or further advancing her veterinary knowledge. She often attends events to watch her patients compete. Of course, she also enjoys spending time with her four-legged cohort, “Indy”. Keep an eye out for a black mutt with fuzzy paws, as Dr. Kara often takes her along on calls! (Source)
