Dr. Carla Castro was born in Los Angeles and went to school in Torrance, CA. She grew up in the beach cities — what Angelenos call “The South Bay” (Hermosa, Redondo, and Manhattan Beach). After graduating from the University of Hawaii at Manoa on the island of Oahu with a BS in Animal Science, Carla earned her DVM from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, CA.
Carla chose Steinbeck Peninsula Equine Clinics for her Internship because she strongly believes the SPEC team practices best-case medicine, all of the doctors are passionate about what they do, they care about all of their patients, and are excellent examples for her to look up to. She says she knew this internship would not be easy, but was looking to grow. The SPEC team is inspiring her to keep learning every day and become more confident as she gains hands-on experience. She’s passionate about both patient care and client education. Carla usually takes the calls from SPEC clients who are more comfortable speaking Spanish, since it was her first language. She intends to continue practicing veterinary medicine in a bilingual setting, and is considering pursuing a Residency in Comparative Nutrition, but must first finish her Masters in Public Health.
Carla’s personal life is as busy as her work life — she strives for work-life balance, making her daily meditation and yoga practice a priority. She also loves cooking and meal prep. When she has nights off from work, Carla heads to a dojo near the clinic to train in two martial arts, Muay Thai and Brazilian Jujitsu. When she has weekends off, she spends time engaged in outdoor activities including body surfing, snow boarding, hiking, and trail riding on her friends’ horses. One new hobby Carla hopes to develop within the next few months is archery, with an eye to trying horseback archery! She also likes to visit family — Carla recently adopted a Belgian Malinois mix puppy named Maxxi, who is quite a handful, and currently lives with her dad in LA. (Source)
